Tip of the day: How to win an Online Auction?

Many blogs and internet forums have their own tutorials and tips to win online Auctions. We made a small list of the best tips so you can learn how to become a bid champion. Enjoy it!

  • Choose an intimidating user name.
  • Bid on one Auction at a time.
  • Start to bid on ‘beginner auctions' -  where only new bidders who have not won an auction before are allowed to bid.
  • Choose a limit bid you're willing to spend and not exceed this limit.
  • Do not bid until the last 10 seconds or so - Your best chance to win the auction is to get the last word in.

Penny Auction World: How everything started - Swoopo

The first Penny Auction site was started in Munich, Germany in 2005. Telebid was a revolutionary idea that brought Auctions to the online world. In 2008 Telebid changed the name for Swoopo and expanded around Europe and U.S.

Swoopo had a controversial beginning, being heavily criticized. The critics used to say that the Penny Auction site was a legalized way of gambling. Some people used to think that winning Auctions involved skills and luck. However, the argument about "skill" was put down when The Washington state attorney general's office defended Penny Auctions sites concluding that they don't constitute gambling under state law.

Swoopo also revolutionized the Penny Auctions world by being the first site which allowed the bidders who lost an Auction to get back all lost bids towards purchasing. Another curiosity: Swoopo's first name was Telebid because users would bid on the Auction by phone!

Penny Auctions sites quickly became a great idea and many other sites started to compete with Swoopo for the bidders market. Once the competition was established the sites started to invest in better products to be auctioned, new marketing channels, greater efficiency of existing channels and new geographic markets.

Besides the competition Swoop also started to have financial problems. In 2011, the site became inaccessible and Swoopo's company filed for bankruptcy. There is no information regarding whether the site will reopen or close permanently.

Penny Auctions World: Brazil

We will start a new segment on the blog: The Penny Auctions World. Anytime we hear any news about online Auctions in different countries we will share it with you. The first country we will talk about is Brazil.

The pioneers of the idea in Brazil were Sylvio Avilla and Guilherme Pizzini. They decided to start this business in the country after Sylvio Avilla went to Germany and learned about this new kind of e-commerce. In 2008 they launched the first Penny Auctions site in Brazil, Olho no Click ("looking at the click"). After that the Penny Auctions fever completely swept the country.
With the help of two other partners they launched Olho no Click in 2008 with a budget of about 270.000 dollars and the success was immediate. By the begining of 2011 the website had already 400.000 customers, after achieving a profit of about 2.5 million dollars in 2010.

In 2012 Brazil has 121 Penny Auction sites. Despite the fact that only 43 of them are active, the brazilian online Auctions market expects for this year a profit of about 21 million dollars (same profit achieved in 2011).
